A challenging CGC test week gave clear insight into Nakina’s training needs, setting the stage for stronger focus, leash work, and continued progress.
🐾 Reset And Refocus
This week looked different than expected. I didn’t do any structured training with Nakina due to having a friend visiting, and we also had our CGC test. While the outcome wasn’t what I had hoped for, it provided clear direction for what we need to focus on moving forward.
Training
We have one week of individual walks remaining to complete AKC Fit Dog Bronze, and about a week left to finish AKC Novice Tricks.
We also sat out Advanced Beginner this week after missing several classes while I was sick.
The CGC test was held at Bass Pro in extremely hot conditions. I was not feeling well and nearly overheated, which likely impacted both of us. Nakina’s focus and loose leash walking were not at the level needed to pass, and we did not meet the standard.
While I suspected this might be the outcome, it was still disappointing. That said, the result gave me exactly what I needed — a clear understanding of where the gaps are, particularly with loose leash walking under pressure and maintaining focus in challenging environments. We’ll use this as a reset point and continue building those skills with intention before testing again.
With a week between sessions at our training club, the plan is to finish AKC Fit Dog Bronze and AKC Novice Tricks, while reinforcing foundational obedience.
Socialization
Nakina understands permission-based interactions well in smaller settings. She can remain composed with one dog and a few people. Larger group environments are still more challenging, and we will continue working on maintaining focus and reducing over-arousal in those situations.
She also becomes highly excited when seeing people she loves, which will continue to be an area of focus through structured, consistent training.
